Essential Tips for Preparing Your Quilt Top for Shipping

Shipping a quilt top can be a daunting task, especially if you want to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. Proper preparation is key. In this post, we will explore essential tips to help you prepare your quilt top, backing, and other materials for shipping, ensuring it reaches its destination safely and ready to go.

When it comes to shipping your quilt top and other items, preparation can make all the difference.

Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing Your Quilt Top for Shipping

1.  Square up your top - Make sure your top is as square as it can be.  This helps the design also be square and straight.

2. Stay stitch the quilt edges where there are seams -  This keeps the seams from pulling apart during the quilting process.

3. Check all seams within the quilt body - Repair any loose or gaping seams before shipping your quilt to SVQ.  

4. Mark the top edge of the quilt - Attach a safety pin or a note labeled "Top."

5. Backing - Your backing must be at least 8" wider and 8" longer than your quilt top.  If SVQ will be piecing your backing, make sure you include enough backing to measure at least the required dimensions.

6. Square up your quilt backing - If you including backing that is already pieced, make sure it is as square as it can be.  Mark the top with a safety pin or with a note labeled "Top."

7. Binding - If SVQ will be adding binding to your quilt, include enough fabric to make an adequate number the 2.5" strips.  Pin a note to this fabric labeled "Binding Fabric."

8. Batting - If you are supplying your own batting, it must be at least as wide and as long as your backing (8" wider and 8" longer).

9. Carefully fold your quilt top, backing fabric, batting (if supplying your own) and binding fabric (if SVQ will prep and stitch) and place within your chosen shipping box.

Congratulations!  You are now ready to Complete the Quilt Intake Form and and ship your quilt to SVQ!

Turn-around time is about 2 weeks.  During the busy season (September to December), turn-around could be up to 3 weeks.  A turn-around time estimate will be included on the Customer Quote sent to your email after you fill out the Quilt Intake Form.

Choose the Right Packing Materials

• Shipping Box: Choose a sturdy box that is slightly larger than your folded quilt. This will provide extra space for cushioning.

Pack Your Quilt

Now that you have your materials ready, it’s time to pack your quilt. Here’s how to do it effectively:

• Stack your folded backing, binding, batting, and quilt top in the box. Ensure it fits snugly without being crammed.

• Add Cushioning: Fill any empty spaces in the box with additional bubble wrap or tissue paper. This prevents movement during shipping.

Seal and Label the Box

Once your quilt is packed securely, it’s time to seal and label the box:

• Seal with Tape: Use packing tape to seal all openings of the box. Make sure it is secure to prevent any accidental openings.

• Label Clearly: Securely tape the shipping label to the box. You can also write the recipient’s address clearly on the box in case the shipping label is damaged.

• Standard Shipping: This is often the most cost-effective option. However, it may take longer for the quilt to arrive.

• Express Shipping: If you need the quilt to arrive quickly, consider express shipping. This option is more expensive but ensures faster delivery.

• Insurance: For valuable quilts, consider purchasing shipping insurance. This provides peace of mind in case of loss or damage during transit. USPS provides $100 in insurance for free.
